Sermon: "How to Recognize the Spirit of God" Part 6 — Radical! - Randy Roberts
Seventh-day Adventists (along with certain other Christian denominations) believe that the Spirit of God continues to be active and present in the church today. To hold that conviction means that the Spirit can inspire messages that are very timely for our unique moment in history. In that sense, we are like the church to which John wrote in his first epistle. They, too, believed that the Spirit was active and present and speaking in ways germane to their circumstances.
To confess that reality, however, creates an immediate dilemma. How do we know if it is the Spirit of God who speaks and leads and guides us, or just another “spirit?”John faced the same challenge in his church. It seems that his opponents were claiming to be guided by the Spirit and yet were teaching spurious doctrines and behaving in ways that were not consistent with the historic faith John had delivered to them.
In the face of such, John had some important counsel to offer them regarding how to recognize the Spirit of God. What was his counsel? What did it mean to them? What does it mean for us today?
Today, I pray for the discernment of the Spirit of God as we seek answers to these most important questions.
