INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
The psalm that is the focus of this week’s sermon (Psalm 96) brings us face-to-face with a reality that has been the focus of my study and interest for many years – the worship of God. Here’s a key verse in the psalm: “Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth” (Psalm 96:9, TNIV). It is a call that will be echoed again in the message of the first angel of Revelation 14: “He said in a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water” (v. 7, TNIV).
Maybe it’s in order to share a few brief quotations on the topic of worship which I find meaningful.
“Wash your face very morning in a bath of praise.”
– Charles Spurgeon
“A drop of praise is an unsuitable acknowledgment for an ocean of mercy.”
– William Secker
“It behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshiping we are becoming.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Nothing should be done or sung or said in church which does not aim directly or indirectly either at glorifying God or edifying people or both.”
– C. S. Lewis
Clearly, the worship of God is the highest activity in which we human beings can engage. It recognizes and praises God for who he is and what he has done. It reminds us that we are creatures who are dependent. It is an expression of gratitude. And it is a telling of the story of God and God’s people to any who will listen.
So join me as we worship God with all that is within us!

MEDITATIONS
A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling “darkness” on the walls of his cell. – C. S. Lewis
The perfect church service would be one we were almost unaware of; our attention would have been on God. – C. S. Lewis
