INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
To whom do you turn when you’re in trouble? Where is the first place your mind goes? If you’re a child, your mind first goes to your parents. If you’re a student in trouble with your studies, your mind may first turn to your teacher. If you’re an employee who is struggling with an issue at work, your mind may first turn to your boss. But is there a person to whom our minds can first turn regardless of what the issue is?

Psalm 123 gives an answer to that question. It says, essentially, “If you are treated with contempt by the proud and haughty, your eyes can turn to God as your first source of support.”

When I sat down to study this psalm more carefully, its content brought to mind immediately a passage from the pen of Ellen White that has become a favorite of mine. It’s a passage that speaks to the issue of this psalm.

Let the soul be drawn out and upward, that God may grant us a breath of the heavenly atmosphere. We may keep so near to God that, in every unexpected trial, our thoughts will turn to Him as naturally as the flower turns to the sun.

Keep your wants, your joys, your sorrows, your cares,
and your fears before God. You cannot burden Him; you cannot weary Him. He who numbers the hairs of your head is not indifferent to the wants of His children. ‘The Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.’ James 5:11. His heart of love is touched by our sorrows and even by our utterances of them. Take to Him everything that perplexes the mind. Nothing is too great for Him to bear, for He holds up worlds, He rules over all the affairs of the universe. Nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for Him to notice. There is no chapter in our experience too dark for Him to read; there is no perplexity too difficult for Him to unravel. No calamity can befall the least of His children, no anxiety harass the soul, no joy cheer, no sincere prayer escape thelips, of which our heavenly Father is unobservant, or in which He takes no immediate interest. ‘He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.’ Psalm 147:3. The relation between God and each soul is as distinct and full as though there were not another soul upon the earth to share His watchcare, not another soul for whom He gave His beloved Son. (Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, pp. 99–100. Italics added).

Whatever difficulty you face today can be brought to the Master and laid at his feet. In calm and quiet dependence on him, we may find a rest for our souls and a lasting answer to our troubles.

May his peace be yours.
