Sermon Notes:

At the start of the New Year, it seems that almost everyone takes stock of their
life, how are things going, what do I want to improve, what should I stop/start doing,
etc. This is the time that most people set their resolutions for the year, and while
some resolutions stick, the large majority typically are dropped within a few weeks.

At this point you may be wondering why I’m talking about New Years at the
end of April, which is a good question. It’s more about the idea of setting goals,
expectations for our lives, adjusting our priorities. This is a take stock of your life
type of sermon. Where are we going, how are we doing, what changes do I need to
make.

Have you ever heard someone talk about a passion in their life? Maybe it was
cars, technology, horses, volunteering, or running. Whatever it is, they really seem
to focus almost their entire life around this passion, everything that they do in some
way seems to bring them back to this area that fulfills them.

This morning we are looking at Deuteronomy 6:6-9 where God tells His people
that is how they need to be towards His law. To speak about it when they wake
up, as they walk, when they sit down. But not just speak to anyone, talk to their
children about these things. The idea is that we pass on to the next generation
what God means in our life and how much He affects ALL that we do.

The reason I bring New Years into this is that we often take stock once a year,
and maybe we think of our walk with Jesus as we make our resolutions, but quite
often it involves weight loss or exercising. Today the focus is purely spiritual.
Where is your walk with God? How often are you talking with Him? How much of
your everyday lives does He affect? And most importantly, how are you sharing that
with our next generations?
