Meditation:
“It’s very common to hear talk about heaven framed in terms of who gets in, or how to get in. What we find Jesus teaching, over and over and over again, is that he’s interested in our hearts being transformed, so that we can actually handle heaven.” – Rob Bell, Love Wins
Scripture Reading: Luke 19: 9–10, TNIV - Stella Leonard
INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Lost and Found
Sometimes it seems as if I spend all my time looking for things that I’ve lost. Lost keys are the worst—I’m sure they plan their escape as soon as I go to sleep each night. And they are continually finding new places to hide. I’m also good at losing one sock from every pair. Since I can’t persuade them to sign up for match.com it’s always up to me to find a mate if I want to face the day with socks that actually belong together. Sometimes I’m absolutely sure I have another twenty-dollar bill in the pocket of a pair of pants but I can’t seem to find the right pair. And the book I need most for an upcoming sermon or presentation always seems to be the one missing from the shelf. Did I loan it to somebody or leave it somewhere?
I know what it’s like to seek for what’s lost. I also know how happy I am when the lost is found. I know what it’s like when the sofa finally decides to disgorge the keys it swallowed up the night before. Or when I reach into the pockets of a pair of pants and find that missing twenty.
But the joy I feel is nothing compared to the joy God feels when he finds lost people who have been estranged from him. Luke 15 tells three “lost and found” stories—a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. And it tells us two important things about God. God seeks. And, as we are reminded at the conclusion of each of the three stories, God and all of heaven rejoice when the lost is found.
