Pastoral Welcome: Darold Retzer
Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:16–20, TNIV - Joelle Reuer
INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON Among the most famous words that Jesus spoke while on earth are the words of what we today call the Great Commission. Here is an incident—including his words—as told by Matthew: The Great Commission 16) Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17) When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18) Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20) and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:16–20 (Today’s New International Version) We haven’t always taken these words with the seriousness they deserve. At least not on a personal level. We have left it up to the evangelists and the broadcasters and the church’s leadership and, basically, to others in general. We haven’t been very serious about it on a personal level. I suspect one reason for that is because we don’t want to offend people or to seem weird. I wonder how things might be different if we did two things. First, if we made it a habit to listen first so that we might learn from others about their lives. Second, if we shared the gospel with them while respecting the fact that the way God works out his gospel in their lives might differ from the way he does it in ours. The stories in today’s message give some examples of what that might look like in certain settings. By the time the message is finished, I hope that you might be able to name some ways it might look like in your setting. God bless you.
