Sermon notes:
Beautifully decorated trees. Carolers clad in warm clothes. Ginger and cinnamon and spice. Scenes of quaint cottages blanketed in snow, with smoke circling upward from the chimney. A jelly-bellied Santa urging on Dasher and Dancer and all their friends. Such are our mental pictures of Christmas.
Compare those with the actual realities of the biblical account. A dark cave as a resting place for the night. A birth with no physician or midwife. No warm, clean bed for the wailing newborn. Animals viewing the scene. Muck. Mire. Filth.
Very different scenes. They are different in one other way as well: this Baby—no ordinary baby—is born to rule. He is born to be Lord. “Today,” said the angel to the shepherds, “in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:11, TNIV).
He was born to be Lord of your life and mine.
