Sermon Notes:
The gifts have been opened, the wrapping thrown out. We’ve put the Christmas music aside for another year. We’re enjoying the final days of vacation and prepaing for a busy January. It’s time to end … and time to begin.
The beginning. The end. The first. The last. The start. The finish. Each of those can describe this Sabbath sandwiched between Christmas and the New Year. It’s the end of the year but, on this Sabbath, we also turn and look toward a New Year. It’s the end of the possibilities for 2014, but the beginning of possibilities for 2015. It’s the end (hopefully) of regrets for the year just past, and the beginning (I trust) of
eager anticipation for the year that lies ahead.
On this important Sabbath, we turn to a text of Scripture in which Jesus prays a prayer … and then answers his own prayer! Do you know that it’s a text where you can be part of his answer? You may not at first think so. You may not feel notable or important enough. But, truth be told, the answer to his prayer is ordinary people—like you—like me.
