Sermon Notes:
Periodically, every company has to do an inventory. Every company, at some point, has to take stock of where it stands, how much product it has, and what it needs to do in order to continue to serve its customers in the best possible way. In other words, in order to answer the question of what it can do in the future, the company needs to answer the question of where it stands in the present. What companies and businesses do, individuals ought to do as well. It is a healthy endeavor to ask oneself questions such as, Where do I stand? What is working in my life? What is not working? With what am I satisfied? What causes me dissatisfaction? It’s a time of taking stock. The New Year’s celebration is a good time to do such an assessment. In fact, a lot of people do such under the guise of making New Year’s resolutions. Having taken some time to consider what things are working and what things are not, they then say, “In the New Year, I am going to read more, watch less TV, lose some weight, add to my savings, be more kind, pray more fervently, read my Bible through,” and the list goes on. However, anyone who has ever made a set of New Year’s resolutions has also known the disappointment of knowing—sometimes by the third or fourth day of the New Year!—that this will not be the year that such changes occur. “I couldn’t even keep my resolution for one week!” And yet, such past disappointments ought not rob us of engaging in the important task of taking assessment of where we are and then plotting a course for our next steps. Today, we turn to a passage in Scripture which will aid us in such an enterprise. Are you up to the task? Are you willing to take some time to assess your life? And then, are you willing, with the help of the Spirit of God, to chart a course for 2018? Take the plunge, and see where God (and life) lead you this coming year! Happy New Year!
