Pastoral Welcome: Marvin Ponder
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:14–16, TNIV - Nicholas Ault
INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON The leaves continue to fall from the trees; the weather is increasingly crisp; we’ve had some rain; and there are more and more Christmas decorations everywhere we go. It’s unavoidable—Christmas draws near! Christmas creates vastly different feelings in the lives of people. Many cherish this as their favorite season of the year. Children can’t wait for its arrival. Merchants count on this season for its income. And even churches and charities know that people give more generously now than at any other time of the year. And yet, for many – possibly even a rather quiet majority – this season breeds dread. Loneliness, sad memories, debt, family division, and many other realities cause this to be the saddest season of the year. This year, we celebrate all of the good things which Christmas means and brings but without forgetting the difficult experiences that many have. The title for this year’s Christmas series is, “Christmas: Your Needs, His Names.” I have no doubt but that you come to this season of the year with certain very real needs clamoring to be met. The names and titles of the Baby born in Bethlehem clearly underline the ways in which he can meet every human need. Here is an outline of our series: November 28 “Jesus: Christmas When You’re Lost” December 5 “A Son: Christmas When You Need Understanding” December 12 “King: Christmas When Life’s a Battle” December 19 “Messiah: Christmas When You’re Tired of Waiting” December 26 “Immanuel: Christmas When You’re Lonely” Today we turn our thoughts to those times when we feel misunderstood. “Is there anybody who understands me?” As painful as that can be in human terms, it is even worse when God seems distant and unavailable. “Does God understand my plight?” As we consider the son born to Mary, I pray that you will discover that, more than any other person or being, Jesus understands you! God bless you. And Merry Christmas!

MEDITATION Maker of the sun, He is made under the sun. In the Father he remains, From his mother he goes forth. Creator of heaven and earth. He was born on earth under heaven. Unspeakably wise, He is wisely speechless. Filling the world, He lies in a manger. Ruler of the stars, He nurses at his mother’s breast. He is both great in the nature of God, and small in the form of a servant. – Augustine of Hippo
