INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON

At the end of this weekend, we celebrate Valentine’s Day. It is, no doubt, a day of mixed emotions. There are those, on the one hand, who dread this day, not having a special person with whom to share it. And there are those, on the other hand, who enjoy the experience of being with the one they love.

A magazine called Country Woman asked its readers: What gifts would you like from your sweetheart for Valentine’s Day? Here are several of the replies they received:

C.V., from Rapid City, South Dakota, wrote: “Sweetheart? What sweetheart? All I really want is a sweetheart for Valentine’s Day!”

Another woman – H. R. from Lethbridge, Alberta – replied: “I don’t want anything on Valentine’s Day other than the attention, respect, and faithfulness my husband gives me any other day of the year.”

The mind of L.G. from Columbia, Tennessee, was on romance: “How about a book of Cupid coupons? I’d be able to redeem them for things like a foot massage, a fun night out, or hugs and kisses when I need them most.”

And then there was M.S. from Saint Charles, Illinois, who said: “I’d love to have a day when my husband fixes me breakfast, tells me how terrific I look, picks up his socks, and listens to what I say.”  (“Power of 10, Gifts I’d Love from My Sweetheart,” Country Woman [January/February 2006], p. 57).

Their answers to the question underline the desire we each have to be loved – simply, kindly, truly. We yearn for such love from a human companion. Our divine Friend offers us such love.

Since this is a time that celebrates such love, it is a good time to talk about relationships that are in the process of becoming permanent relationships based on love.  Are you engaged or about to be engaged? Or maybe you look back on your engagement and are able to identify what you learned from it. Our focus today is on “The Best Thing You Can Do for Your Fiancé.” So, what is that best thing? It will be interesting to see if we come to similar conclusions!

Above all, I pray for God’s grace in all our relationships.
