Sermon Notes:
As Christians in the United States of America, we know little of being forced to choose between obedience to the law of God and the laws of the land. We live in a land where freedom of religion has been a protected right. We are accustomed to being able to stand for what we believe without (much) intervention from the state.
I say without much... The recent movie, Hacksaw Ridge, underlined that there are those times when people of conscience have faced struggle in order to be able to live out the dictates of their conscience. But that has far more often been the exception than the rule.
Such, however, is not the reality of many brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. According to the website Open Doors (https://www.opendoorsusa.org/ christian-persecution/), each month 322 Christians are killed for their faith, 214 churches and Christian properties are destroyed, and 772 forms of violence are committed against Christians. (These include acts such as beatings, abductions, rapes, arrests, and forced marriages). From the same website comes this de nition of persecution: “Christian persecution is any hostility experienced from the world as a result of one’s identi cation as a Christian. From verbal harassment to hostile feelings, attitudes and actions, Christians in areas with severe religious restrictions pay a heavy price for their faith.”
Daniel certainly knew what it was to stand for his faith in God. In today’s story from Daniel (Daniel 6), his faith faces the jealousy of others who desire to halt his rise in leadership. As a result of their behind-the- scenes scheming, the law of the land collides with the practice of his faith. What does he do? What are the consequences? What can we learn from him, for now, and for the future?
Join Daniel in Praying as the Lions Roar.
