Sermon Notes:
If you suddenly found yourself in a situation where you were in significant need of support and care and love, where would you turn? For most of us, the answer is that we would turn to our family members. The next most likely answer is that we would turn to our closest friends. If you are a member of this congregation, however, and the church isn’t high on your list, then we are failing to live up to our mandate to be a true community of Christ-followers.
The New Testament leaves little room for doubt about the central role of caring for one another in the body of Christ. Unfortunately, our emphasis on outward behavior and on performance often robs us of the ability to openly admit that we need the care of others. They will know I’m not perfect. They will know that I struggle. They will know that I’ve failed.
I love these words from Marvin J. Ashton: “If we could look into each other’s hearts and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.”
If we would be the community Christ calls us to be, the words of Paul to the Galatians are crucial: “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ” (6:2). It’s a directive to which we must respond in obedience.
With care,
Randy Roberts
