Sermon Notes:
Twelve disciples huddled around Jesus for the Passover meal. A heaviness hung in the air. The solemnity of Jesus’ bearing must have created foreboding in the hearts of those men. This night and this Upper Room will be witness to something seminal: Passover will become Lord’s Supper before the night has ended. And the Lord’s Supper will occupy an enduring place in the life of the followers of Jesus for all time to come.
How could they have prophesied the central place that meal would hold in the lives of the followers of Jesus? How could they have known that Christians for millennia to come would receive the bread and the cup, finding in them simple yet profound reminders of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope? And how could they have known that while Jesus welcomed them to his table on that night, a time would come when sinners would feel excluded from its nourishment?
And how could they have known that two thousand years later, the words of David Watson would capture both the core meaning as well as the exclusiveness of that table? “This meal is for sinners only.” Only.
Does that include or exclude you?
