Sermon notes:
The beginning of a new year tends to be the time when most people resolve to eat less. But today, we will feast! Christ said that we must eat, and eat like our lives depend on it. In John 6:57, 58, right after explaining that he is the Bread of Life, he says, “Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
Today’s worship service is not a routine sacrament that we are bound to by tradition. It is a feast, an anniversary, a celebratory stick-in-the-eye of the enemy as we paint to town red with the holy generosity of Jesus Christ. When you partake of the emblems today, you are commemorating the day you became immortal, an actual heir to the Universe Builder. And today, by partaking of these symbols, you confirm your consuming love for your indestructible Savior.
May God speak to you personally today through these symbols.
