INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
As we stand at the threshold of a new year, we come to the Supper Table of the Lord. What better way could there be for the friends and followers of Jesus to begin a new year? Before us lies a great unknown. What will the year 2010 hold?
Doubtlessly, joys and sorrows, triumphs and tragedies await us. Through it all, we long for the hand of Jesus to hold us tightly in his grip. What better reminder of that reality could there be than to begin by sitting down to a meal with our Lord—the meal that he left for us to share.
The followers of Jesus have participated in the Lord’s Supper for two thousand years. Still, it elicits a wide range of reactions—from guilt and dread to peace and joy. It is not uncommon for worship service attendance to be down on the weeks that it is celebrated. Much of this stems from a sad misunderstanding of the fact that this meal, as David Watson has said, is for sinners only! It is a tragic misunderstanding to think that only those who are “good enough” can participate in the Lord’s Supper. It is not intended to be celebrated only by those who have achieved a certain maturity, or by those who live from one victory to the next. It is intended for every single one of us.
When we come to this table, we come not only in need of his grace; we come to this table as an expression of our gratitude for his grace. So come one! Come all! It is time to enjoy to meal of grace which he has spread for us! God bless you.
And Happy New Year!
