INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Welcome
It is a singular privilege to welcome to our pulpit Dr. Jan Paulsen president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Dr. Paulsen is known both for his keen intellect and his spiritual depth. We are grateful for the opportunity to host him and his wife here at Loma Linda University Church. We anticipate God’s blessing on us all as we hear the Word expounded through his ministry.

A significant contribution from the second half of the twentieth century was the understanding of the importance of narrative. While we have not traditionally thought of it as such, the Great Controversy theme is our narrative framework. It has given us focus and meaning in terms of our purpose and mission as a church; but also in our understanding of Scripture itself. While stories are part of narrative, too often the two are separated, and the result is a profound loss of narrative.
The Genesis 1 creation story includes first the earth, then non-human creation, and finally human creation—and each is pronounced “good”; and combined, they are “very good.” Tragically, today the integrated and interdependent worlds of the non-human and the human have largely become unhinged, and this ecological crisis raises important and serious ethical questions.
To remedy this situation they must be put together and stay that way. The climax of the biblical narrative in the book of Revelation is the fulfillment of God’s promise of healing to all creation. As Seventh-day Adventists the call is to rise to the challenge and be agents of hope, but rightly understood, this was part of our mission from the outset.
Join us today for the two programs: 10 a.m. Reason for Renewal; 3 p.m. Hope of Renewal.

MEDITATION
A personal testimony: Lessons I have learned in leadership—and somewhat forgotten, and tried to relearn, but never quite mastered. When all is said and done, ‘at the end of the day’, what is it that really matters in leadership? – Jan Paulsen
