Sermon Notes:
We are three days into 2015. That qualifies as barely having stepped across the threshold of a new year! At this point in time, we know nothing about what the year ahead will hold. For some, the first few hours of this year have utterly uneventful. If the rest of the year is like its first three days, it will hardly be worth a Sunday afternoon yawn. For others, the first days have been busy, productive, promising. And for still others, these days have already seen storm clouds rise. Regardless of what the early moments of 2015 have been for you, one simple fact remains: the impossibility of knowing what the months ahead hold for each of us.
I will, however, venture a guess: like it or not, the currents of this year’s winds will blow some storm clouds into your life. In fact, more than a guess, that’s a certainty. Someone once said that “into each life, some rain must fall.” And some of that stormy rain will fall on each of us this year.
That being true, with what assurance can we face the New Year? What does Jesus offer us? We turn our focus to a passage in Matthew’s gospel as we seek an answer today.
May God’s best be yours in 2015.
