Sermon Notes:
I don’t believe there’s a better way to begin a new year than at the Table of the Lord.
On this first Sabbath of the year of our Lord 2013, then, we begin by participating
in the Lord’s Supper. We return to a table that is rife with meaning. At this table we
remember our Lord’s passion and suffering; we remember his death and life; we
remember his promise to return and eat the meal with us; we remember the cost of
forgiven sin; we celebrate the freedom of new beginnings and new life. It is a place,
in other words, where the full orb of Christian life is fleshed out.
I invite you to hear once again the words of our Lord, “Take and eat; this is my
body…. Drink from it, all of you” (see Matthew 26:27). I urge you to respond to his
call and to experience his life. Recognize in this simple act something far more than
a habit or custom. Recognize it as symbolic of all that gives life to the body called
the church. As you do so, you enter into the Spirit who will vitalize this new year.
May God walk with you through each step of 2013.
