INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Today begins our annual Week of Renewal. This week is co-sponsored by Loma Linda University, Loma Linda University Medical Center and the Loma Linda University Church. It provides a unique opportunity for our community to come together before God in worship, study, community and service.
This year’s theme is, “Jesus in Scrubs.” The planning committee agreed that we wanted to consider ways in which we Christ-followers can be winsome witnesses for Jesus in our places of work. Since most of our student body and many of our church and community members are in the health-related professions, we chose that title.
Seven different speakers will share from their study, experiences and prayer what God has laid on their hearts. The week involves the Sabbath morning worship services at the beginning and the end of the week, as well as the 11 o’clock hour each day from Monday to Friday. All programs will be televised on our sister ministry, Loma Linda Broadcasting Network.

Today we begin in 1 John. This wonderful, brief epistle brims with information and instruction about the community of believers in Jesus. This is a community, says John, which is to be characterized by God’s kind of love. Today’s passage will suggest to us one simple though challenging reality that must undergird all of our witness for Jesus.
May you encounter Jesus in a new way this week and, in so doing, may you be empowered in your witness for him.
Blessings.
