Homily: "The Promise" by Darold Retzer
Pastoral Welcome: Timothy Gillespie
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23–26, TNIV - Carol Ann Retzer
Introduction to the Sermon
Jesus made a promise that is special to Seventh-day Adventist Christians. In John 14:3 He promised “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come backand take you to be with me.” (TNIV) What a thrilling promise! He is coming back and we will be with Him! He began that passage by saying, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me” (V. 1). There certainly are lots of troubling things in this world: devastating floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, crime, terrorist bombings, and wars. But Jesus says, “Trust me. I am coming back and you will be with me.”
Today we celebrate communion, the memorial of Christ’s great sacrifice for us—emblems of His broken body and shed blood. But we also look forward to His coming as we remember His death. This thought is expressed beautifully in the book The Desire of Ages:
“The Communion service points to Christ’s second coming. It was designed to keep this hope vivid in the minds of the disciples. Whenever they met together to commemorate His death, they recounted how ‘He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.’ In their tribulation they found comfort in the hope of their Lord’s return. Unspeakably precious to them was the thought, ‘As often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till He come.’ 1 Cor. 11:16.” (P. 659, emphasis added)
As we celebrate communion today let us keep in mind the promise of a divine appointment when we will take part with Jesus in His father’s kingdom. In the meantime we will “proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” while looking eagerly for His return.
