Sermon Notes:

INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON

This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day. As we do so, we have to recognize that the word father creates a mixture of very different emotions in people’s hearts. For some, it brings to mind beloved images of a father who made a positive and profound difference in their lives. For others, it conjures up images of absenteeism, anger, abuse and woundedness.

I cannot express sufficient gratitude for the fact that for me the word carries deeply positive connotations. When I think of the word father, these are the kinds of images that come to mind: love, strength, consistency, protection, stability, love for God and many others. For that, I owe my own father an immense debt of gratitude. Such has created within me the desire to repay that debt by passing such positive associations on to my own children.

In light of Father’s Day celebration, we complete a two-part sermon series which we began on Mother’s Day weekend. The series title is, “Claiming the Fifth” – fifth commandment, that is. Today’s sermon is entitled, “Honor Your Father.”

What does it mean to honor our fathers? What do we do when some fathers didn’t conduct themselves in ways deserving of honor? Such are the kinds of questions we will consider.

On another note, I hope you are making plans to be with us for Camp Meeting 2010.   Our focus this year will be on living the abundant life that Christ offers us. The title of this year’s sermon series is, abundantlifetoday.info. We look forward to music, community, worship, social activities, Bible study and many other aspects of the camp meeting season. The four weekends of August and the first weekend of September are the dates.

Many are scattering in different directions as the summer season matures. We wish each and every one safe travels and look forward to being together when we return.

God’s best be yours.
