Sermon Notes:
Unity and truth always exist in tension. On the one hand, Jesus prayed for unity for his followers. A reading of John 17 underlines just how deeply his heart yearned for his disciples in ages to come to be unified. Further, the apostle Paul’s metaphor of the church as the body of Christ once again underlines the importance of unity. A disjointed body is unable to fulfill the purpose for which it was created.
On the other hand, truth must guide every action we take and every decision we make. In fact, in the very prayer in which Jesus prayed for unity for disciples, he also prayed about truth: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17, TNIV). As Protestants, Seventh-day Adventists know something about standing for truth even (at times) at the cost of unity.
Thus it is that unity and truth always exist in tension. As Seventh-day Adventists approach the upcoming General Conference session, may our prayer be: “Lord, incline our hearts toward each other that we might be united; grant us unity that is based on truth; and give us the courage to stand for truth ‘though the heavens fall.’”
May God richly bless us all.
