Part 7 – The Best Thing You Can Do
Prayer: Shirley Ponder

Meditation:
Be not angry that you cannot make others as you want them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be. – Thomas à Kempis
Even the most heinous grounds for divorce are also grounds for forgiveness. – Jerry Jenkins
When “forgiveness” denies that there is anger, acts as if it never happened, smiles as though it never hurt, fakes as though it’s all forgotten—
Don’t offer it.
Don’t trust it.
Don’t depend on it.
It’s not forgiveness. It’s a magical fantasy – David Augsburger
INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Divorce is a searing pain. It is a wound from which some never fully recover. It is a loss which some would have avoided at any cost, but they didn’t have the ability to effect such a decision. And, to add insult to injury, the anger which it can breed can take hold and cause the bile of bitterness to take hold of a person’s life. Simply put, the costs are often high.
Consider, for example, (from Forbes.com [4-13-07]), the cost of “The 10 Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces”:
Michael Jordan leads the pack with a divorce settlement that will cost him more than $150 million in assets. This gives Jordan the distinction of having the most expensive divorce in entertainment history. Runners-up include:
Singer Neil Diamond, whose 1995 divorce from Marcia Murphey cost him an estimated $150 million
Director Steven Spielberg, who paid Amy Irving an estimated $100 million in 1989 (half his fortune at the time)
Actor Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison ($85 million)
Actor Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva ($80 million)
Musician Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, whose divorce could cost the ex-Beatle more than $60 million
Director James Cameron and Linda Hamilton ($50 million)
Actor Michael Douglas and Diandra Douglas ($45 million and two homes)
Musician Lionel Richie and Diane Richie ($20 million)
Musician Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall ($15–$25 million)
Stunning, is it not? In the face of such high costs – financial, yes, but personal, as well – what is a person to do?
Today our sermon title is, “The Best Thing You Can Do for Your Ex –Spouse (And Yourself in the Process).” You may be asking, Exactly why would I want to doanything for my ex-spouse? It’s a fair question.
Yet, if you have experienced the sorrow of divorce, making the choice to do what we consider today may liberate you from the pain of a deeply painful past.
My prayer is that God’s grace will empower and sustain you to make this choice.
