Sermon Notes:

Church members have often joked about the fact that every time there is a gathering of believers, an offering needs to be taken! Such humor grows out of the reality that offerings are normally taken every time the church gathers in worship. Such has at times created more caustic commentary: “All the church is interested in is my money.”

As a pastor, I wince under such commentary. I certainly hope the church is interested in far more than its parishioners’ money! A pastor’s deepest interests are—and must remain—the hearts and souls and lives and well-being (both temporal and eternal) of those whom God places under our care. But, having said that, we, as members, must also recognize that our money is an undeniable (and very important) part of our day-to- day lives. It is understandable, then, that the church and its leadership is interested in how we all earn and spend and give of our financial resources.

Along those lines, I am reminded of a statement David made in 2 Samuel 24. It comes at a moment when he received a divinely-inspired message to build an altar and offer a sacrifice. The man on whose land he was to build the altar offered to give the land to him, along with oxen for the burnt offering. To this, David said, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing” (1 Samuel 24:24, TNIV). David’s statement is worth remembering every time we come to worship.

We’re going to be thinking about giving for three Sabbaths. Today we begin. Join me for When You Give . . . . It will be an important journey.
