Have you ever had this experience? You sit listening to a leader articulate his or her vision. This leader lays out where this group you’re a part of is going. There is a discussion of the challenges, the pitfalls, and the possibilities. There is also a recognition of the strengths and gifts the group possesses to help accomplish what is envisioned. Finally, the leader paints a picture of what the future will look like when the vision has come to fruition. Have you ever been a part of something like that?

If you have been, here’s my guess: by the time the leader was done talking, you were drawn into the vision, excited about where the group was headed, and committed to doing what you could to help bring it to pass. That’s the nature of a robust and healthy vision: if you dream it and express it, people will join the vision!

Nehemiah found that to be true. In today’s study, we will see what happens when Nehemiah’s vision of rebuilding city walls is finally completed. The first thing that happens is the following: “Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it” (Nehemiah 7:4, TNIV). Will they come? Will Nehemiah’s vision be fulfilled as other people join it?
