Meditation:
Someone can be a good third baseman, but not a good pitcher. If I’m called to play third base, I’m going to be the best third baseman I can be. It was a liberating moment when I realized I didn’t have to be great at everything. – Max Lucado
The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet. – Frederick Buechner
If a ministry is not good for you, you can bet you’re not good for it. – James D. Berkley
Responsive Reading: Ephesians 4:7–13, TNIV -Danielle Wuchenich, Melanie Wuchenich Jobe
Sermon Notes:
How would you relate to someone who called you a minister? Would you feel
awkward? Would you blush? Be upset? Laugh?! My guess is that most people
would correct the speaker and say, “Oh! You have me confused with someone else,
maybe with my pastor. My pastor is right over there!”
What if I were to tell you that calling you a minister is a correct statement? What if
I were to tell you that every believer in the body of Christ is called to be a minister?
What if I were to remind you that the membership of the body of Christ is called a
kingdom of priests? (see Revelation 1:6, NLT).
Maybe the next questions you would have for me are, “Is there a difference between
a pastor and a minister? And, if so, and if we are all called to be ministers, then
what is the pastor supposed to do?” Fortunately, the New Testament has a clear
answer for such questions. And the answer helps to outline exactly what the church,
its membership, and its leadership are to do. In truth, the answer is life-changing for
any local church. And it is that answer that we deal with in today’s sermon.
One request: as we go through today’s worship service, would you give thoughtful,
prayerful consideration to responding to the opportunity at the end of the service
to become a part of a cadre of equipped and trained ministers of the Loma Linda
University Church? It could change your life!
Yours in the service of Christ.
