INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
We put a lot of energy and effort into the care and keeping of our physical heart – and rightfully so. We jog, swim, cycle, walk, go to the gym, to boot camp, do sit-ups, push-ups, squats, lunges, and the list could go on and on. And on! All in the interest, not only of having a fit body, but in the interest of having a long life and a healthy heart. So much depends on our heart! If our heart goes down… well – you get the point as to why we pay attention to our hearts.
And did I mention food? That’s even more challenging! To watch what we eat so as to care for our hearts is a daily discipline – and some of us are losing the battle!
But as much energy and attention that we give to our physical hearts, it is shocking how easily we tend to ignore our spiritual hearts. Yet, the Bible has a great deal to say about the care and keeping of our hearts.
In the Bible, the heart is usually symbolical of the core essence of a person – their self, their soul, their identity. No wonder the wise man wrote: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23, TNIV). It is a theme which echoes all through the Scripture, including in the life and teaching of none other than Jesus himself. So, in the midst of focusing on the best thing we can do for a variety of people in our lives – others, our spouses, our boyfriends and girlfriends – it is entirely understandable that we would pause this week and ask, “What is the best thing I can do for my heart?”
I urge you to join us for this worship service. And may God bless you in rich ways.
