INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
But it is also a psalm for those individual calamities that come into each life. It has been said that into every life some rain must fall. Well, when that rain falls in your life, Psalm 46 just might be the psalm to which you wish to cling. Martin Luther used this psalm as the basis for the majestic hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” Anybody who has sung that hymn knows how heartening it is to remember that, in the midst of the most violent storm, our God is indeed a mighty fortress.
When I was in the 5th grade, our teacher helped our class to memorize this psalm. We went through it day after day, reciting verse after verse, over and over again. To this day I can still hear her voice leading us in that memorization. What is surprising is how much of it I still remember! I suppose it may be for that reason that this psalm continues to be a favorite of mine.
May you remember this week that God is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1).
Now, one other word: Tim Gillespie will be preaching on Psalm 51 next week (Sabbath, March 27). The week after that (Friday, April 2, and Sabbath, April 3), is the Easter weekend. I invite you to join us on Friday evening at 7:30 for a Good Friday service, and then on Sabbath morning at either first or second service for a celebration of the risen Christ. These are always moving services. Don’t miss them.
May God bless you.

MEDITATIONS
No man has a right to lead such a life of contemplation as to forget in his own ease the service due to his neighbor; nor has any man a right to be so immersed in active life as to neglect the contemplation of God. – Augustine of Hippo
Our whole life on earth involves trouble; and through the troubles of our earthly pilgrimage we find God. – Augustine of Hippo
There is hardly ever a complete silence in our soul. God is whispering to us well-nigh incessantly. Whenever the sounds of the world die out in the soul, or sink low, then we hear these whisperings of God. He is always whispering to us, only we do not always hear, because of the noise, hurry, and distraction which life causes as it rushes on. – Frederick W. Faber
