INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Continuing the Psalm Series, I chose Psalm 51, or as I like to call it: A Psalm for the Dirty. The word “dirty” is a good term in conjunction with this psalm. David, the presumed author, was seeking forgiveness through his repentance and the grace offered by a God who truly loved him.
One of the powerful things about this psalm is David’s honest recognition of his sinful actions. Most Christians are familiar with the story of David, Bathsheba, and Uriah. Reflecting on what had happened, David was finally cognizant that there was only one way that he might be cleansed of his sins. He comes before God with an acute awareness of his need for forgiveness. Perhaps true repentance and forgiveness begins here for all of us . . . .
