Sermon Notes:
Over ninety percent of an iceberg lies beneath the surface of the water. Its hidden depth combined with the close to freezing temperatures of the surrounding water can pose an immense danger to passing ships. Their chilled metal becomes brittle and can easily be damaged by even small icebergs. That is why ever since 1913, the International Ice Patrol has worked hard to collect and disseminate data about these hazards. It collects data from a variety of sources: aircraft flights, radar, and ice sightings from ships. It uses computer modeling and current information to predict the path of icebergs and warn ships via radio and the Internet. All this happens to protect ships from unassuming icebergs, sometimes only a few meters wide. At first glance the sixth commandment looks as unimportant as the tip of the iceberg. After all, how many of us have committed murder or even seriously contemplated it? As author Christina Hergenrader writes, “We believe that this commandment is for only a small group of people, an instruction God gives to the worst of the worst—serial killers, mass shooters, and terrorists who are living in pitchblack darkness.” But beneath the surface of this seemingly irrelevant commandment lies a much deeper principle that, if crossed, can sink our lives. Join us this Sabbath as we dive deep into the sixth commandment. Joey Oh Administration
