“We’re getting a new boss.” These five little words cause more fear and anxiety than most phrases in the world. This phrase has caused my own neck to tense up, my pulse to quicken, and a boulder to drop itself to the bottom of my stomach. Perhaps you’ve been told these words too, and perhaps you’ve had the same reaction. It’s pretty scary to change bosses—even if you couldn’t stand the last one! It’s scary because you don’t really know if things are about to change for the better or get a lot worse. Daniel 7 opens with the words, “In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream. . . .” Babylon was under new management. Daniel was unsettled. The people were unsettled. Would things change for the better or the worse under this new king? It is within the angst of transitional leadership that Daniel has a dream. It is a dream filled with monsters. But more than that, today we will see that monsters come and go, but the Master reigns eternal. Roy Ice, Pastor for resource development
