INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
How often do you review God’s leading and guidance and providence in your life? Do you ever take the opportunity to spend enough time in solitude so that you are able to remember his actions for you? Do you ever tell to others the story of his leading?
Psalm 124 leads us to such questions. In this psalm, the people of God, while making their way to Jerusalem for one of the annual festivals, are telling to each other the remarkable story of God’s guidance and providence in their lives. They are telling it by saying, “If…” In other words, they so clearly see what he has done that they are considering what would have happened if he had not acted on their behalf.
I wish that we told each other such stories much more often. One of the reasons that we might not tell them is that we have not accustomed ourselves to reviewing the actions of God in our lives. Let this psalm be an encouragement to you to do exactly that!
We are going to take a break from our Psalms series for two weeks. The first week is Mother’s Day weekend. Our service and our sermon will celebrate God’s gift of moms! The second weekend, a guest speaker named Richard Bewes will bless us with his exposition of the Word. I hope you will join us that day! Then, on May 22, we will finish this series with the magnificent Psalm 139!
