Sermo Notes:
Is there one right way to worship God? The history of the church seems to suggest that the answer is yes! After all, consider how many battles have been fought and how many wars waged in defense of one style of worship or the other. Consider how many times members have been willing to split churches in order to preserve a given worship style. Consider the time invested and the study given to the question of worship … and to its form. And such is understandable. We are, after all, dealing with the worship of the living God! Our heart’s desire must be to do it in a manner pleasing to him.
So the answer to the question of whether or not there is a right way to worship God should be obvious: yes! However, consider that the right way to worship God is to worship him “in spirit and truth” (John 4:24, NKJV). After all, Jesus said that those are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks (see John 4:23). So the right way to worship God has to do, first and foremost, with what takes place in my heart. However, when it comes to the style of worship… well, Scripture moves in what may be some surprising directions.
Today, we turn our attention to these most important matters. It is my hope and prayer that God will bless us each as we worship him.
