INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON

Congratulations! What an exciting weekend! Every time graduates process down the aisle of our church, my heart skips a beat. It is such a significant moment in a person’s life! It represents the culmination of dreams, work, success (and sometimes some failure!), and the promise of the future. Family and friends make the entire weekend’s experience an unforgettable one. If you are one of this year’s graduates – or you are related to one – I offer you congratulations and God’s richest blessings.

Understandably, our focus in this week’s worship services is on this cohort of graduates moving into their professional lives. Besides an excellent education, what else will they take with them into the world?

In an attempt to answer that question, my focus in this week’s sermon is an Old Testament book from which we don’t often read – the book of 1 Chronicles. Tucked away in a list of names is a statement worthy of our ruminations. I’m not going to give it away to you here. You’ll have to come to church to find out what it is!

I will, however, say this much: it challenges us to be students of our times and listeners to the Spirit of God, for in so doing, we will live lives that speak to the profound issues of our day.

So, again, congratulations! And may the Spirit of grace fill you with his peace and joy.
