“I just need a miracle.” Have you heard that line, or even spoken it for yourself? It’s likely many of us have said these words because we all walk wounded in our world. And even all these centuries later, none of us much likes being wounded. People crave being well. We just need more miracles.
Two disciples of Jesus met a crippled man who craved being well. This wounded man lay outside the temple gates in Jerusalem begging in a time when magic, sorcery and deceit masked themselves as physical and even spiritual healing. The man craved being well, but all he asked for was money.
If you want pasta, you head to an Italian restaurant. If you want friendship, you go where people are. If you want beauty, you spend the afternoon at an art gallery or the mountains. Where do you go if you want to be well? Where do you go if you need a miracle but all you can ask for is pocket change?
We listen today to the story of this crippled man, but also to the story of two disciples he met. It seems everyone in this story craves being well. Where do you go for that?

Meditation
We live with the realities of being wounded and frantic. To be faithful witnesses of God’s salvation, we might have to say with our lives that no one will be saved by frantic activity. – Stanley Hauerwas
