INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
This Sabbath we continue our focus on Jesus – “Jesus: First, Last and Best” is the title of this sermon series. In this week’s sermon, we turn our attention to the relationship between Jesus and the doctrines of the church. Most of us would probably agree that doctrine is important. Even as we recognize that, however, we must also recognize that many have had a less than positive relationship with doctrine. Such has been the case because an overemphasis on doctrine has too often placed Jesus in the background.
It is true that doctrine is central. S. Lee Homoki says, “Doctrine is the foundation for the Christian life (Titus 2:12). Everything about the execution of living a life pleasing to the Lord is built upon it. We can’t have right living without right doctrine.” We must agree with Homoki. “Yes! Doctrine is important! It is so true to say that what we believe leads to how we live.”
Such a focus on the importance of doctrine underlines its vital nature. Alister McGrath points out, “Inattention to doctrine robs the church of her reason for existence and opens the way to enslavement and oppression by the world.”
But, having recognized the validity of such statements, we may still wonder exactly how Jesus and doctrine are related. What is the relationship between Jesus and doctrine?
Such is the focus of our study today. It is my prayer that, by the end of our time together, you will be more deeply committed to the central doctrines of Christianity and Adventism, but that you will also be more deeply committed to the centrality of Jesus for all that we believe and do.
May God be with you.
