INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
How recently have you thanked your mother for all she has done for you? Our mothers give us life, bring us into the world, dry our tears, listen to our tales, and believe that we will become something worthwhile in the world when we grow up. Having said all that, they too seldom receive our gratitude and appreciation. This Mother’s Day is an excellent opportunity for you to express gratitude to your mother for all she has done for you.
Now, having said that, I must add two caveats. First, for some, mother is a word that brings negative connotations. There may be a host of reasons why such might be the case. Whenever it is true, it is always a tragedy. Even in such situations, however, there has often been someone who has stepped into the gap and provided much of the mothering that you received. If such is the case in your life, then thank the one who was your mother in spirit if not in body.
The second caveat is this: your mother may already have gone to her rest. If such is the case, this may be a wonderful opportunity to pass on to others whatever good legacy she left behind.
To every mother I say, Happy Mother’s Day!
I remind you that next weekend Richard Bewes will preach in both services. Richard Bewes is former rector of All Souls Church, Langham Place, London. I urge you to join us! Pastor Bewes has preached in our church before. If you were here on that occasion, you know that what we will hear on Sabbath, May 15, will be biblically-based, theologically sound, and of true interest.
On Sabbath, May 22, we finish our current series on Psalms.
May God bless you in rich ways.
