Sermon Notes:
As a preacher, I take notice of the topics which listeners tend to appreciate and those that they don’t. For example, I don’t get much positive feedback on sermons about faithfully returning tithe and giving offerings. It seems that many of us don’t find that to be our favorite theme! Another less-than-popular topic is obedience. I can understand that, to some degree. A large part of both Protestant, as well as Seventh-day Adventist history, focused so strongly on that topic that it left many feeling discouraged and defeated.
On the other hand, one of the topics toward which many of us gravitate is the theme of God’s love for us and his acceptance of us—the fact, in other words, that he accepts us as we are and that we can stand before him with confident assurance. I not only love to hear that topic—I love to preach it!
Apparently, John did as well. After all, we’ve already addressed it more than once in this brief letter known as 1 John, and today’s passage addresses it again. Yet, instead of thinking, “Here we go again!” I find myself thinking, “Thank God for yet another opportunity to hear the gospel!”
I trust you feel that way, as well.
