Sermon Notes:
Courage is a strong, brave word. What do you envision when you think of courage? When I hear that word, I think of brave soldiers on the battlefield, rescuing their comrades from certain death. I think of political leaders doing what’s right, even in the face of losing votes. I think of a passerby pulling an accident victim out of a burning car. I think of a teenager going against the peer pressure because she believes in something. Those are the kinds of things that come to mind when I think of courage.
But there’s one other thing that comes to mind, and that is this: all of those scenarios—and many more like them—are remote to my life. They’ve never happened to me, and they likely never will. The truth is simple: what happens in my day-to-day life is much more ordinary, much more mundane. And that realization causes me to ask this question: Is courage needed in the life of an ordinary person? Should courage be woven in to the fabric of the character of an ordinary follower of Jesus?
To such matters we turn our focus today.
