Sermon Notes:

Babylon. The mere name brings to mind images of an ancient city filled with power
and able to make war. For the student of the Bible, it also brings to mind images of
forces arrayed against God and his people—powerful forces. In the face of such
overwhelming might, what will God’s people do?

The first thing we must do is pay attention to the second angel of Revelation 14.
That angel issues a terse message, “Babylon is fallen.” And it is, isn’t it?

One internet site says: “Babylon was an Akkadian city-state (founded in 1867 BC
by an Amorite dynasty) of ancient Mesopotamia, the remains of which are found in
present-day Al Hillah, Babylon Province, Iraq, about 85 kilometers (55 mi) south of
Baghdad. All that remains of the original ancient famed city of Babylon today is a
mound, or tell, of broken mud-brick buildings and debris in the fertile Mesopotamian
plain between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon)

So what does the second angel’s message mean to us in the twenty-first century?
Such is our focus today.
