Introduction to the Sermon
If Revelation 4 gave us the insight that God is still on the throne, Revelation 5 gives us insight into what kind of God is on the throne.
The two images for God in Revelation 5 are lion and lamb. Charles Spurgeon captures the indefinable qualities of God with these words, “Remember, Christ was not a deified man, neither was he a humanized God. He was perfectly God and at the same time perfectly man.” The image of lion and lamb, when joined together, constitute the heart of the gospel. Of that gospel, Michael Horton writes, “The gospel is not good instruct-ions, not a good idea, and not good advice. The gospel is an announcement of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ.”
As we consider this magnificent chapter, those two metaphors for God will give us great insight into the kind of God who has the church in his hands.
Yours for a God-centered church,
Randy Roberts
