It’s not the ship in the water but the water in the ship that sinks it. So it’s not the Christian in the world but the world in the Christian that constitutes the danger. – J. Wilbur Chapman
Christians must be careful that the fad for “liteness” does not affect their spirituality. – Henry Fehren
If you attempt to talk with a dying man about sports or business, he is no longer interested. He now sees other things as more important. People who are dying recognize what we often forget, that we are standing on the brink of another world. – William Law
Scripture Reading: John 17:9–11, TNIV - Jerri-lee Hahn
Sermon Notes:
Our current sermon series, Teacher, is, unfortunately a bit broken up. We missed a
week since the last time we were together, and we will miss one more week before
the next time we are together. A word of reminder, then, might be in order. We are
studying Jesus’ prayer in John 17. As you read this prayer, you will no doubt sense
that Jesus’ focus was intensely relational – his relationship with his Father, and his
relationship with his disciples. In the section we consider today (John 17:6–19), the
focus of Jesus’ prayer is his disciples.
Jesus packed a life’s worth of living into three-and-a-half years with those twelve
men! In that brief but pregnant time, the imprint of Jesus was indelibly inscribed on
their characters. How he could have such a profound impact in such a brief time becomes evident as you read how he prays for them. His words almost drip with love
and concern for them! As he contemplates the fact that he is leaving them, his devotion to them is abundantly clear. Of particular interest to us today is what specifically
he prayed for when he interceded for them.
Does it warm your heart to realize that, just as he prayed for his disciples of old, he
talks to the Father about you today? Be of good cheer, for that’s exactly what he
does!
In the name and love of Jesus.
