Sermon Notes: Few experiences are as disorienting as is being lost. How recently have you been lost? Do you remember the emotions? Possibly the frustration? Maybe the fear? It’s not fun to be lost. Furthermore, what if your experience of being lost happened at night? In the dark? Isn’t it true that darkness significantly compounds the experience?
In fact, even when you know where you are, darkness can create fear and dread. Ask the child who nds him or herself alone in the dark. Or consider the last time you had a bad dream and lay awake longing for daylight.
Being lost. Being in the dark. Not knowing which way to go. Not being able to see the way things really are. They can be frightening, disorienting experiences. In truth, if we can just see the way things really are and if we can just see the way to go, everything else gets better, doesn’t it?
In today’s passage from the gospel of John, Jesus makes the statement: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5). Contained in those words is a promise to any one of us who has ever been lost or who has ever been afraid of the darkness (literally or spiritually). If you are facing that today in your life, then I hope that today—whatever your current situation—you will experience the light of Jesus.
