NTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON Os Guinness wrote: “The rapid changes taking place in our world bring more moments of truth into people’s lives than ever before.” William Law wrote: “Alas, so many intelligent people become preoccupied with dates and linguistic problems concerning the Bible that they have not time to seriously consider the Bible’s main theme, God’s love for us and our loving response to him. They seem so concerned for truth, yet neglect the real purpose of truth, which is to bring us closer to the God of truth.” And Albert Schweitzer wrote: “Truth has no special time of its own. Its hour is now—always.” The common theme which weaves its way through these three quotes is truth. I suspect each of these writers had a desire to know truth and to know truth as it applied specifically to their day and time. If that is indeed the case, they shared much with the early apostles. In today’s sermon, we turn our thoughts to the verity that truth is both timeless and timely. The early church ran smack into that reality in Acts 15. In that chapter, the story is told of the early church’s struggle to come to terms with how God’s timeless truth—that he wanted to bring all people to himself—was to be worked out in a timely manner—what to do about the Jew/Gentile question. The story has some important lessons for us today. By the time we’re done, you might join me in saying that the way Adventism has long understood this theme is a key reason for being Adventist! God’s best to you.

MEDITATION Whenever the people of God are growing in grace, they will be constantly obtaining a clearer understanding of His word… But as real spiritual life declines, it has ever been the tendency to cease to advance in the knowledge of the truth. Men rest satisfied with the light already received from God’s word, and discourage any further investigation of the Scriptures. – Ellen G. White
