INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Tolerance is a word much in vogue today. Some go so far as to suggest that it is the chief virtue of our age. On the other hand, intolerance is viewed by many as the most egregious sin of the age.
We can understand why. After all, to reject or to (even worse) discriminate against people because of the color of their skin, their gender, their religious belief or any other way in which they are different from us is deplorable.
But let’s linger for a moment on that last one – religious belief. The church we study today – the church in ancient Thyatira – was called on the divine red carpet for tolerating a certain belief system. In fact, continuing to tolerate that belief system would jeopardize their standing with Christ.
What was that belief system? Why was it so dangerous? Could we be doing the same thing in our day and time and church? And finally, how do we know when to be tolerant and when to draw a line in the sand?
By the time we’re done listening to the letter to Thyatira – the longest of the seven letters – the insights we have may help us to live lives that are more deeply devoted to Christ.
Yours for a faithful church.

Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable. – G. K. Chesterton
Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you're willing to pay. – Steve Farrar
