Sermon Notes:
Christ-followers have long wrestled with how they, as citizens of the kingdom of God, are to relate to this world in which we now live. We have been told time and again that we are not to become overly attached to the things of this life. Such a theme echoes and re-echoes in Scripture. On the other hand, God created the physical world that exists and, when he did so, affirmed that “it was good.” (See Genesis 1). Are we really supposed to dislike or even “hate” this world?
John seems to suggest that such is the case. After all, he says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world” (1 John 2:15, TNIV). What does he mean by that? Am I not to love my homeland? Not to love my neighborhood? Not to love my home? Not to love nature in all its splendor? Or is there something else to what John is saying?
As we grapple with such realities today, we have to do so in recognition of the fact that we live in this world but for that world.
Join me as we explore this most important theme.
