Scripture Reading Mark 2:18–22, TNIV - Alyssa and Evan Knecht
Sermon Notes:
In Mark 2:18, Jesus was asked, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees
fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And as Jesus often did, he answered with a metaphor
of guests not fasting while the bridegroom is present, with the parable of the unshrunk cloth
tearing away from old cloth, and with the parable of new wine bursting old wine skins.
The question was essentially asking, with maybe a genuine desire to understand or a desire
to trap Him, why Jesus’ disciples were not practicing traditional religious acts that showed
their piety. The question was framed in direct contrast to how they viewed Jesus’ actions of
“eating and drinking with sinners and tax collectors.”
Why did Jesus answer as he did? What significance do His answers have for his people
today? What do the pious acts of John’s disciples and the Pharisees have to do with our
younger generations? Is it possible that Jesus’ religious outlook was so new and fresh, that it
was startling to the Pharisees?
Today we will explore new traditions that deepen our faith and can be practiced by all
generations of our church.
May God bless us as we study together!
