Sermon Notes: For the person who is lost, the consuming concern is Where am I? How can I find the way to my destination? For the person who is deceived, the concern centers on What is the truth? How do I discover it? For the person whose time is limited--who faces an untimely death--the major questions are How can I get a new lease on life? Is there a way to live longer, fuller, healthier? I wish such experiences, accompanied by such questions, weren’t common. However, you and I both know that, in truth, each of those experiences is, in fact, too common. But such experiences go beyond being lost in a new city or being uncertain whether a politician is telling us the truth or whether I will be able to extend my life ten more years. While those (without doubt) are important questions and experiences, they become more acute when applied to our spiritual existence. Consider the person who, deep in his or her soul says, “I am a lost person. I cannot find my way in life. I do not have peace about eternity.” Or ponder the quandary of the young adult who says, “I don’t know how to decipher truth from fiction. I don’t know what to believe about God, life and the world.” Or even think about the individual who realizes, “This existence that I call life is really not living it all! There must be something more. There must be something better. There must be something beyond the here and now.” Where do such people turn for answers? Well, to each such person Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6, TNIV). What does He mean by that? How does it affect those of us who live two thousand years from when He spoke the words? How can it help us sort through our deep spiritual questions and yearnings? Join me as we explore this beautiful but sometimes challenging statement. Randy Roberts, senior pastor
