INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON For the Christian, the Bible is an irreplaceable reality of life. We peruse it. We study it. We memorize it. We buy it. And we buy it. And we buy it. It is not unusual for a Christian home to have a dozen or more copies of the Bible and to have those copies in a variety of different versions. There are “literal” translations of the Bible and “thought” translations of the Bible and paraphrases of the Bible. And we buy them one and all. Furthermore, it’s not like we outgrow the Bible. We have editions for children, editions for teens, for young adults, for married couples, for men, for women—well? The list could go on and on. We have devotional Bibles and study Bibles and red letter Bibles and every other kind of Bible that can be imagined. The Bible is the best-selling book of all time. Not only that, but it is the best-selling book every year! Many more things could be said about the Bible. What is hard, however, to say with any degree of certainty is how well we understand the Bible. I am not talking about whether or not we can turn to a passage, study it, and walk away with a confident conclusion. That in itself is a worthy question. But what I am addressing is whether or not we understand what the Bible is. In other words, do we understand what we mean when we say that the Bible is the inspired Word of God? Do we know what it means to say that a writer of the Bible wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit? Every credible Christian denomination—including Seventh-day Adventism—makes the claim that the Bible is inspired. However, different denominations understand quite differently what that means. So what does it mean to say that the Bible is inspired? And how have Adventists understood the issue? That is the topic to which we turn today. The answer is, again, one of the important reasons why I am a Seventh-day Adventist. By the time we are done, it could be that you will reach the same conclusion. So join me as we consider this theme. And bring your Bibles!

MEDITATION The Bible is a stream of running water, where alike the elephant may swim, and the lamb may walk without losing its feet. – Gregory the Great I am glad there are things in the Bible I do not understand. If I could take that book up and read it as I would any other book, I might think I could write a book like that. – Dwight L. Moody
